What does MUTE stand for?

MUTE is the name of the new electric vehicle from Technische Universität München. Read backwards, it contains the name of the university (TUM) and the letter “E”, which refers to e-mobility.

Why is TU München developing an electric vehicle?
-
For TUM, developing an electric vehicle suitable for mass production is an opportunity to fuse research and innovation and create a viable product. MUTE harnesses many of the different ideas, concepts and proposals in the field of electric mobility to show that electric vehicles can offer a completely new world of mobility.

How can I participate?

You can find various ways to take part in the project under "Joining the team”. If you would like to contribute but are not part of TUM, contact the department you are interested in. We always welcome new ideas and support for the project.

What is MUTE’s maximum range?

MUTE achieves a minimum of 100 km irrespective of how it is driven. This distance can be increased through a variety of measures such as a built-in range extender. You can find further technical details under “Technology ”.

How fast is MUTE?

How did the project come about?
-
The original idea and initiative were developed in the Institute of Automotive Technology, at TUM’s Department of Mechanical Engineering. The team now comprises 200 assistants and students from 20 different departments.

Does the MUTE project go beyond the actual car?

Yes. TU München will be presenting further ideas from the different research fields within the framework of MUTE. The project also enables all participants to gain extensive experience – in both product development and the individual research fields.

What will MUTE cost?

Unlike other electric vehicles currently on the market, the total cost of ownership (TCO) for MUTE will not exceed the TCO for other compact cars of the same size with internal combustion engines. MUTE makes electric mobility affordable.
